Are you still confused about how blogging works? Do you have no clear picture of blogging?
This article will make everything crystal clear about blogging, how it works, the stages, how one makes money from blogging; the entire working of blogging in just 4 fundamental steps. Don’t miss anything till the end.
YouTube and the internet is full of videos and articles on blogging, strategies, and methods. However these resources are like dots that don’t make a clear picture of blogging. Therefore, what I am going to share will give you connecting links between all those dots and build a satellite view of blogging.
Further, to make it super easy, I will give you a perfect analogy to understand it much better. Let’s start!
4 fundamental steps
First of all, it’s important to understand that all pro bloggers like Neil Patel, Rand Fiskin, Harsh Aggrawal, etc., they don’t have any secret recipe to make their blogs a grand success.
In fact, they follow nothing more than these 4 fundamental steps. What makes them stand out is their consistency, their dedication, and how effectively they implement on each of these four fundamental stages of blogging.
I also follow nothing more than these 4 steps. Hopefully, it’s working for me, and it will work for you as well.
Let’s start with number 1.
Step #1: Website development: Build an awesome website
The first step of blogging is building a grand blogging website for yourself. No matter if you do it on WordPress, Blogger.com, Wix, etc., pick a platform and host it, and make your website discoverable on the internet. Plan its design, its pages layout, color pattern, and all other development aspects of your website. Overall, if you want to blog, you need to have your own home on the internet.
Some of you will argue; what if I write on platforms like LinkedIn, Medium, Quora, etc? Will it not count as blogging?
The answer is NO. It’s not blogging. It’s just writing as a user of that platform.

Analogy:
Blogging is like starting your own shop in a market. The first thing you need is a physical store or a building. If it’s located in the main market, it’s great. If it’s located on the corner road, it’s fine. But, you need to have a space to start a shop.
If you don’t have a store, then first you need to buy land, which is more like buying a hosting. Then, building the shop with all the construction tools, which resembles WordPress or other CMS platforms. Sometimes you hire architecture or civil engineers to help you in construction, which is just like hiring me to design your website.
Step #2: Content Strategy: write engaging posts
After enough work on website development is done, it’s time to create engaging content. It can be videos, audios, graphics, images, blog posts, podcasts, etc. Your content is your main attraction to the readers. A blog with quality content that helps readers, or solve any problem of the readers, ultimately builds trust in their minds. This trust is important for the coming stages.
Creating content is a never ending process for bloggers. No matter what stage of blogging you are, content creation is an ongoing process. The more content you have, the better it is. However, there is a proper strategy to post content on your blog. It cannot be any random topic, or any random patterns. Those bloggers without any well-thought content strategy don’t succeed much.
Analogy:
Continuing to our shop analogy! After your store is built in the market, its time to stock products that you have planned to sell. It can be clothes, books, cosmetics, shoes, groceries, food, etc., based on what niche you have picked. Because no one comes to empty store to buy anything. If you have no products to offer to the customers, its no use opening up a store. Similarly, if there are no content on your website, it’s just an empty space on the server.
Step #3: Marketing: You need good number of readers
Creating content is not enough. Because content does not pay you money directly. It’s those real people who will pay you when they take required action on your content.
To get those real people or readers on your blog, you require several marketing strategies. These strategies include promoting your articles on social media, i.e., social media marketing(SMM), or it can be SEO based ranking. Marketing is a must to build a constant flow of visitors on your blog. Paid Ads. and email marketing are some other trending marketing method these days.
Analogy:
With your shop loaded with products, your next focus is to get your customer’s attention. You can install hoarding outside your shop, distribute offer banner, provide discounted sale, and implement other methods of marketing to get attention on your shop.
Step #4: Monetization: Time to make money
The 4th stage blogging is Monetization. By this time, your website is designed well enough with good number of content and traffic. So, the next step is to make money.
There are several ways to make money from blogging. The most common of them is Google AdSense. Affiliate marketing is another way you can make heavy passive income. Sponsored post, hosting online courses, or selling your own homemade products or digital products, etc., are some of the other popular ways to make money from blogging.
Analogy:
Again back to our analogy! After your customers are in your store, they check your products, if they like anything, they finally pay you against the products. This is how you start making money from your shop. The similar goes with the blog; visitors when like anything on your articles, they either purchase using affiliate links, or click on display ads, or buy your digital products, which earns you money.
End notes
These are the four fundamental stages of blogging. I hope you have a better picture now. Anything you come across in blogging will fall in any of these four stages. There is nothing left outside these four stages.
Don’t assume that these stages are isolated from each other. They are inter-twined. For example, while creating content, you still need to keep your website development under regular maintenance. While marketing, monetization and content creation is also an ongoing process.
The better you perform at each of these stages, the more successful your blog is likely to be.
